Backtagging: Absolutely! I am, admittedly, a pretty disorganized kid, so don't feel shy about prodding me if I've let something fall through the cracks.
Threadhopping: Sure. If it looks like an important plot-heavy thread, then maybe ask first, but light small-talk is free game.
Fourthwalling: Go for it. Canon puncturing is fine too, but he'll probably think your character is missing a few screws, so to speak.
